<abstract xml:lang="en">

The article addresses the problem of group psychological methods effectiveness in various cultural contexts. Based on the analysis of Western and domestic approaches, four cultural barriers have been identified (i.e. image shame, distrust of strangers, instrumentality, and high power distance) that make classical verbally oriented group discussion ineffective in the Russian environment. Empirical observation of 27 female relatives of combat participants confirmed that the respondents reject "conversational" formats, but are actively involved in joint volunteer activities, where self‑disclosure and mutual support spontaneously arise. As an alternative, a model of "event community" is proposed, which implements the mechanisms of unity and preservation of a social person. It is shown that the event community can facilitate post‑traumatic growth, bypassing cultural barriers of shame, and distance of power.
