The article deconstructs the phonological rule governing the formation of degrees of comparison of English adjectives. The aim is to demonstrate a systemic contradiction when applying this rule to participial adjectives and to justify shifting the focus from phonology to morphology. Two classes of phonetically monosyllabic adjectives are analysed, i.e. monomorphemic (control group) and transparent participles (experimental group). The methodology includes quantitative analysis of data from Reverso Context and Collins CoBuild corpora (total 1.2 billion words) using the chi‑square test. Monomorphemic adjectives (foul, proud) show 96–99% preference for synthetic forms (‑er/‑est). Participles (known, bored) categorically reject synthetic forms, demonstrating 99.96–100% preference for analytical constructions (more/the most). Статья посвящена деконструкции фонологического правила образования степеней сравнения английских прилагательных. Цель работы — демонстрация системного противоречия при применении данного правила к прилагательным‑причастиям и обоснование необходимости смещения фокуса с фонологии на морфологию. Исследование опирается на анализ двух классов фонетически односложных прилагательных: мономорфемные (контрольная группа) и прозрачные причастия (экспериментальная группа). Методология включает количественный анализ данных из корпусов Reverso Context и Collins CoBuild (общий объем 1,2 млрд слов) с применением критерия хи‑квадрат. Мономорфемные прилагательные (foul, proud) демонстрируют 96–99% предпочтение синтетических форм (‑er/‑est).
