<abstract xml:lang="en">

The article addresses the small prose of V. Nabokov from the 1920s–1930s as a creative laboratory for developing narrative and intermedial mechanisms of dual world construction. Using narratological and intermedial analysis, the study identifies key instruments for ontological instability creation in short stories "The Potato Elf", "Bachmann", "Terra Incognita", and "Music". The study is novel in that it considers these early stories not as peripheral material but as a key "laboratory" where strategies for creating the "other world" are tested with maximum intensity. It is established that the pathology of consciousness, the dreamlike realities overlapping, and musical counterpoint are successively employed by V. Nabokov as precise operators for deconstructing a single reality and generating an alternative one. The findings show the central concept’s technological genesis in Nabokov’s poetics. Further prospects for studying his small prose within the context of the modernist experiment with form are highlighted.
