<abstract xml:lang="en">

The article deals with the role of letters as a key resource for understanding the first developmental stages of academic German studies under the influence of the Austrian philologist Wilhelm Scherer. Modern historiography shows a steady interest in the "anthropological turn," shifting the focus from global processes to the individuals’ everyday experience. In this context, personal sources, especially epistolary texts, acquire the status of a fundamental basis for reconstructing the past and allow us to see history not as a dry sequence of facts, but as a living process refracted through individual consciousness. The researching is based on the principles of narrative lingo‑historiograph. The methods of synthesis and analysis of original correspondence have been applied, as well as historical and cultural commentary. The conclusion is made that epistolary sources reveal the features of creative and research process, the relationships between scientists and their students, which are not always apparent by studying academic papers and official documents. The correspondence reveals W. Scherer's diverse scientific interests, his talent as a mentor, and highlights the national characteristics of the development of German studies in Austria.
